Emerging from the silent and freezing depths of the Nordic woodlands, DAUDSVEVNA presents a debut offering that feels less like a collection of songs and more like a summoned entity. This is a project shrouded in deliberate anonymity, an approach that allows the listener to focus entirely on the soundscapes of darkness, melancholy, and ancient ceremony without the distraction of ego or personality. With Havaættar Thursættar, the band delivers a potent slab of Scandinavian Pagan-themed black metal that manages to be both fiercely raw and strangely atmospheric.
Musically, the album taps into a primal vein of the genre. Listeners familiar with the shamanistic fervor of early Arckanum or the rugged textures of Panphage will find themselves on familiar, hallowed ground. There are also echoes of the pre-“Eðelland” era Ildra here, particularly in how the music evokes the sensation of wandering through untamed landscapes. However, DAUDSVEVNA is not merely mimicking the giants of the past. They stand firmly on their own, crafting a sound that draws the audience into a world of intense ritual and faint, dying hope. The music balances on a knife-edge between utter hopelessness and a majestic, epic scale that is increasingly rare in a scene often diluted by modern trends.
This release marks another significant discovery for No Colours Records, a label with a storied history of bringing legendary underground acts like Urgehal and Nargaroth to the forefront. It is fitting that such a label would champion this specific brand of blackened art. Havaættar Thursættar feels like music born directly from the soil and the roots, untouched by the outside world.
